Foundation of Honeywell

The School was founded by Mrs Dorid Otiwa Archampong and Mrs Naana Pokua Biney.  Mrs. Doris Otiwa Achampong is a trained teacher. Institutions she attended include the University of Ghana, Legon The University College of Education, Winneba, The Akrokerri Teacher’s Training College, and the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration(GIMPA).

Her educational background includes special training for pre-school organization and training for trainers. She is also an Assistant Director of Education and the past Greater Accra Regional Director of the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE).  She has held various positions in the Ghana National Association of Teachers and participated in many educational and training programmes on pre- school education. Her teaching experience of 40 years is of immeasurable contribution to the establishment of  Honeywell School.

As a Director of the school with experience in training of pre-school organization, she provides a wealth of knowledge and relevant assistance needed for pre-school organization.  As a successful counselor and mother, she also seeks to ensure a healthy and good results-oriented upbringing of little ones in our ever changing world. She is efficient, dedicated, affable and dynamic and has a keen interest in positive traditional family values and upbringing and also appreciates quality world class education of which she is well exposed to. Her hobbies include teaching, singing and reading.

Naana  Pokua  Biney  (Managing Director) Mrs. Biney received her Bachelors from the University of Ghana and Masters from the University of Leicester Management Center. Her studies in Child and Developmental Psychology equip her with great insight to child development. Her experience at Achimota School included a well-rounded education with extra curricular activities. Growing up as an all round student, Mrs. Biney had a keen interest in “how things work” as a child.

She believes that science and math need not cause a setback in achieving academic success but should rather give a push and versatile foundation for children to explore, observe, decipher and conclude in any given situation. Being an avid reader, she is anxious to introduce reading to children as early as their attention will permit, its benefits being immeasurable.

Above all, Mrs. Biney believes that love and discipline can never be over emphasized in the upbringing of children from birth. As the eldest of five siblings, she bears testimony to the lasting effect of consistent and positive love and nurturing on little ones and its rewards for a lifetime. Her hobbies are cooking, reading and traveling to new places.

Here at Honeywell School, we will take into consideration your child’s academic and emotional requirements whilst in our care. This, however, will only be successful with the complete co-operation of parents and guardians in all aspects.

Curriculum - Early Childhood Goals

Children are encouraged to express themselves as individuals. Equipment that encourages early learning skills are found in each room for each stage. These equipment emphasize learning through encouraged participation. As children develop an interest and enjoyment in early learning, their enthusiasm and confidence begin to grow. Children will be encouraged to respect one another, develop friendships, understand their feelings, feel positive themselves, tidy up between activities, share and take turns and become each other’s helpers.

We listen to you, the parents and guardians, and work closely with you and your little ones to provide effective care and education through a carefully planned curriculum, enabling your children enjoy a smooth transition through nursery to school. The seven areas of our early foundation to be tackled  here are:

1.  Personal, social and emotional development 2.  Language and literacy 3.  Mathematical development 4.  Science/Knowledge and understanding of the world 5.  Physical development 6.  Creative development/ art, music, poetry drama, dancing etc 7.  Psychological development

Teaching here is based on a learning approach through play and through topics. Children begin to enjoy more structure to their day. The emphasis on learning through carefully planned and purposeful play makes it an enjoyable experience for your little ones, enabling their confidence, knowledge and understanding to flourish. The little ones are actively encouraged to participate in a variety of activities that are stimulating.

Activities incorporated into the typical day may include group and individual art and craft activities, matching and sequencing, memory recall games, imaginative play, arts and crafts, music and movement, musical instruments, group singing and action songs, water play, group and individual story time, creative play and the home corner and a wide range of large and small insert puzzles. These are some of the activities enjoyed, providing valuable learning experiences for your children as well as aiding in all areas of their development.

In addition to topics that the little ones enjoy, they begin to experiment with a broader range of materials as their understanding widens. Basic number and colouring activities become extended through activities such as action songs, games and the home corner and group discussions. Children are be assessed every term to record their progress.

The planned activities offer opportunities for social interaction, individual and group discussions which give each child an important feeling of involvement. The concept of why, how and when being to be understood and have meaning attached to them, offering plenty of opportunity for social interaction and encouraging individual and group discussions.

The typical day at school will commence with group discussions, involving and valuing each child’s ideas and opinions. The beginning of the day is an opportunity for mental math activities, Circle Time – group discussions centered around the current topic and the day’s activities. The discussions encourage children to contribute to the topic planning which gives them an important feeling of involvement. Individual discussion also enables children to enthusiastically record their news through drawings and practice early letter formation.  Honeywell School ensures a memorable and lifetime learning experience through exciting field trips to places like The Planetarium, The Fire Service, The Pet Village and many more.

If your little one is suffering from an infectious illness, we kindly request that your child does not attend school until they have been given the all clear. If your child is taking prescribed medication, which requires repeated dosage during the day, we ask for accompanying written instructions to be entered into the medication book, senior staff will ensure that this is administered. If your child becomes unwell, whilst in our care, we will make a decision depending on the severity of the condition. We will contact you immediately to make arrangement for collection or if it necessitates hospital treatment, a member of staff will accompany your child to the hospital.   It is important however, to let us know in writing, giving us permission to allow your child to be given emergency treatment at a hospital by health professionals if you or the emergency contact cannot be reached immediately.
